Jordyn Woods Denies Shading Kylie Jenner in TikTok Video Showing Off Her Full Lips

Share

Kylie Jenner and Jordyn Woods may not be besties anymore after that whole Tristan Thompson debacle, but that doesn’t mean everything either one of them does is shade toward the other. Woods had to remind people of this fact when, in the comments of a recent TikTok, she was accused of shading Jenner.

The (unintentionally) offending video shows Woods pinching her lips together while a remix of The Weeknd’s “Party Monster” plays in the background. When the song gets to the lyrics “lips like Angelina,” the video suddenly transitions to Woods showing off her naturally full pout. “Thank you mom & dad for these genetics,” she wrote in the caption. Commenters immediately suspected Woods was low-key shading Jenner—who famously uses fillers to plump up her lips—which Woods denied. “There’s no shade towards anyone,” she replied to one such comment. “This is a trend I’ve seen a bunch of girls doing and I wanted to hop on.”

In fairness, this is a legitimate TikTok trend. Just search the linked audio and you’ll find dozens of similar videos—though Woods seems to have made her own spin on the trend. Most of the vids transition to people with the Angelina Jolie filter, which makes your lips look big, “like Angelina’s.” Unlike many of the people who partook in the trend (not to mention Jenner), Woods’s plump lips are courtesy of her genetics rather than filters.

There’s no reason not to believe Woods when she says she meant no shade to anyone, but it’s obvious why people would make the connection to Jenner. Kylie Jenner’s lips, and her lip fillers, have been endlessly discussed since she finally copped to getting injections back in 2015 on an episode of Life of Kylie. One of the most serious critiques (including in an essay published in this very magazine) points out that while full lips are viewed as a desirable style “trend” when seen on white women like Jenner, Black women have been discriminated against for this very feature.

At the end of the day, Jenner has a right to do whatever she wants to her face. And, more important, Jordyn Woods has the right to celebrate her beauty without being accused of taking shots at a famous ex-friend.
