Between Kate Hudson and Mr. James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, the principal cast of Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, is already a who’s who of Hollywood. And that’s before you get to the dozen or so cameos that Johnson sprinkled throughout the 140-minute film.
Leslie Odom Jr., Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe, Edward Norton, as well as Hudson and Craig, are joined by everyone from Ethan Hawke to Serena Williams, the latter two appearing in minor roles throughout the film. But not all cameos are created equal. While Williams gets a shout out by name, for example, Hawke plays the sunglass-clad security dude shooting an anti-COVID elixir down the throats of Miles Bron’s guests. One A-list actor lends only his voice to his role.
All in all, there are more than half dozen surprise appearances from people not seen in the trailers or any promotional material. For those keeping track, here’s a list of all celebrity cameos you may have missed in Glass Onion.
Angela Lansbury, Natasha Lyonne, Stephen Sondheim, and Kareem Abdul-Jabar
The late Lansbury, who passed earlier this year at age 96, as well as Stephen Sondheim, who passed in 2021, make early appearances as themselves on Detective Benoit Blanc’s Zoom screen. They are joined by Lyonne and Abdul-Jabar, also as playing themselves, for a game of Among Us, which Blanc, ironically, is terrible at.
“That guy looks like Ethan Hawke” was my first reaction to a man who, as it turns out, is actually Ethan Hawke. The actor plays an employee of Miles Bron (Norton) who inoculates Bron’s house guests with an unexplained squirt gun-like device against Covid-10. Hawke appears on screen for less than five, and is thusly credited “Efficient Man” on IMDb.
The renown cellist plays a houseguest at one of Birdy’s “pod parties,” which, if you’ll recall, were A Thing in the early days of the pandemic. It’s unclear if the Grammy-winning musician attended any debaucharous house parties IRL during the pandemic, but I’d like to think so.
There’s no better way to demonstrate obscene wealth than by hiring Serena Williams, 23-time Grand Slam champion and one of the most talented athletes the world over, for a private, virtual training session. Johnson took this conceit a step further by writing a cameo for Williams in which no one shows up for the training session. Cut to Williams looking bored and waiting for someone, anyone, to ask her for some fitness advice.
